Choir from Nigeria apply to come and sing at Various Voices
Various Voices has been contacted by a Choir from Nigeria to come and sing at Various Voices – so far we have sent a positive reply, so it’s early days.
In researching about gay life in Nigeria and gay choirs I came upon this sobering article: ‘Nigeria's anti-gay witch-hunt’, link pasted below:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2007/aug/29/nigeriasantigaywitchhunt
“Nigeria's anti-gay witch-hunt - This African country claims to be a democracy but its persecution of gay people is pure tyranny………………… Given these manifold abuses, Davis Mac-Iyalla and his gay activist colleagues rightly stress that the struggle for gay equality is only one aspect of the broader battle for human rights. Building alliances with other human rights organisations and progressive social movements is, together with international solidarity campaigns, the key to queer liberation in Nigeria. Bravo!”
In the light of recent comments by the Pope and although Catholic doctrine is that homosexuality is not a sin, the church does condemn homosexual acts and the former Joseph Ratzinger stated in 1986 before he became pope that homosexuality "is a more or less strong tendency ordered toward an intrinsic moral evil; and thus the inclination itself must be seen as an objective disorder". Benedict's main target appeared to be same-sex marriages. He claimed that lifelong wedlock between a man and a woman was like "the sacrament of creation".
Catholic bishops in England and Wales are encouraging a more pastoral approach. Last month they issued a leaflet - entitled What is life like if you or someone in your family is gay or lesbian in their sexual orientation? ... and what can your parish family do to make a difference? - urging clergy and parishioners to welcome gay men and lesbians. "As a group that has suffered more than its share of oppression, the homosexual community has a particular claim on the concern of the church," it said. The leaflet cited comments received during a survey suggesting the church acknowledged it may have played a role in victimising and marginalising gay Catholics. These included: "The continual message from the church is that homosexuality is so, so dreadful. Our gay son just hasn't stood a chance."
As we rightly congratulate ourselves on recent performances and celebrate this annual Christian festival, I am once again reminded why I need to remind myself how lucky we are to be able to stand up proud and strong and sing as open gay men and women here in London.
Have a wonderful pink Christmas surround your selves with those you love and spare a thought for those who are denied this basic human right.

25% saving on regular delegate fee until end September
Various Voices London (VVL) is the major singing festival that ‘Team London’ a group drawn from the 3 host London choirs has been organising for the last 4 years and will be the biggest and most fantastic diverse choral festival by the LGBT community that Europe has ever seen, to be hosted right here in London on the South Bank for 4 full days and nights in 7 months time. We now have 63 choirs signed up and 1,300 delegates so far.
As well as singing with your own choir, you could join one of the two festival choirs singing Carmina Burana coupled with a commissioned song or the European debut of Sing for the Cure with full orchestra or consider becoming the Various Voices X Factor pop idol, as well as being involved with other performing, on the two open cabaret stages; flash singing and workshop opportunities over the whole weekend. There will be choral master classes, concerts featuring major contemporary and classical artists, the raucous ‘big gay sing’ concert and not forgetting the 63 choirs from all over Europe and North America. There will be two host concerts on Friday afternoon and Evening in the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Every afternoon there will be a tea dance, with lots of other social events and shopping opportunities all week long.
This is a not be missed experience! Various Voices is a four yearly phenomena and London like no other festival will be open to the 1,000’s of visitors that visit the SouthBank Centre, a world class venue for a world class event.

Lets look at the Cost of London
We want to encourage people to look closely at the concept and the actual costs of the London Festival.
I have included below a number of Frequently Asked Questions from our website. (The website has had a major re-write especially the detail about the festival including the day by day of events and activities. The translations into French / German / Dutch are currently underway.)
London has already secured over £100,000 of support. The London Festival is hosted on a single world-class famous venue and we have exceeding our pledge to offer lower cost options than offered at the Paris festival back in 2005. We have located some good hotel deals, for the 5 night’s accommodation in London you need to enjoy the festival in full: with the strength of the Euro, the costs in London all-round look attractive and affordable.
Choir registration and Early Bird Delegate registrations are available on line until 31st July 2008
Please share this with your choir contacts
Warm regards
Martin

Why do I have to pay extra to attend concerts and workshops?
We have tried to keep the cost of registration as low as possible and do not want delegates to pay for activities and events in which they do not intend to participate. We want each delegate to be able to construct their own individual experience and to choose exactly what they wish to do from the wide range of events on offer over the four days of the festival. Everyone can buy a full priced ticket to concerts and workshops but delegates will get a discounted price.
The costs of registration seem high.
We want to keep the initial cost low to give more people the opportunity to register so they can enjoy the festival.
The costs include:
The early bird delegate fee will be £75.
Concert tickets will range in price from £15 to £25.
Workshops will range from £10 to £20.
If you choose to purchase two lowest cost concert tickets and two workshops with the delegate registration, the cost could be as low as £109 (approx €137).
How does this example compare to Various Voices Paris?
.............................................................London 2009 Paris 2005
Early bird registration .........................£75...............£120
2 concerts @ £15 each less 20%.........£24............Included
2 workshops @ £10 each less 50%....£10.............Included
Total ........................................£109...........£120
Remember, registered delegates will get a discount of 20% for concert tickets and 50% for workshops. Don't forget with your registration, you will also enjoy all of the free performances on the cabaret stages, the welcome party, opening ceremony and all the massed singing and free events. You also have the possibility to join one of the Festival Choirs plus ALL the other benefits of delegate registration. The lowest cost for choir registration in Paris was €200 for choirs of 15 singers or less, in London choir registration fees start for 20 or fewer singers at £100 (approximately €125). London registration gives you the choice so you only pay for what you want to do and see. Its good value for money over 4 full days and is being held in the one complex with some of the best concert halls in Europe.
How much should I budget for each day in London?
This is up to each person but here are a very rough idea of costs
Branded budget hotel like Travelodge is from £35 per night sharing a twin/double room including breakfast
Travel using a prepayment Oyster Card from return zone 1 - £3
Sandwich from £2, tea/coffee/soft drink from £1 - £2
Meal at a medium priced restaurant from £15
From £60 UK Pounds per day as a very rough idea that’s approximately from €75 euro’s.
